Guitar Amp question, for Band practice and Gigs?

Posted on January 12th, 2012 by admin

I currently have a 15 watt guitar amp, its not enough for band practice.

Would a 75 watt 1×12 be plenty of power for practice and small gigs?

My bass player uses a 50 watt 1×12 and we have a 60 watt 2×10 PA (For vocals only) and a fairly loud drummer.

If you go tube then 30 watts would do it. If you buy solid state you probably will need 75 watts.

It’s impossible to answer. You need to remember that watts isn’t a measurement of volume. The actual volume you hear depends on the output of the amp and the sensitivity of the speaker(s). Generally, tube amps sound a LOT louder than solid state ones – years ago I had to use a 100 watt transistor amp for guitar. The 50 watt Marshal tube amp I replaced it with was FAR louder (through the same speakers).
